Scion xB MotorWeek's 'Best'
CHICAGO, Feb. 6 (UPI) -- The boxy Scion xB compact utility vehicle was named the "Best of the Year" by MotorWeek Wednesday at the 100th Chicago Auto Show. Toyota's youth brand aimed the xB squarely at Gen Y but the roomy, car-like vehicle became a favorite of their Baby Boomer parents attracted by its versatility, affordability and fuel-efficiency. MotorWeek, television's first auto magazine, also choose the Scion xB as "Best Small Car" in its annual Drivers' Choice Awards. "Our Scion owners asked for a bigger and better box and we responded with the 2008 xB," said Scion Vice President Jack Hollis. The Honda Accord was "Best Family Sedan," the Dodge Grand Caravan/Chrysler Town & Country "Best Minivan," Chrysler Sebring "Best Convertible," Mercedes-Benz C-Class "Best Luxury Sedan," Cadillac CTS "Best Sport Sedan" and Volkswagen R32 "Best Performance Car." "The Nissan Rogue was "Best Small Utility," Chevrolet Tahoe/GMC Yukon "Best Large Utility," Buick Enclave/GMC Acadia/Saturn Outlook "Best Crossover Utility, Ford F-150 "Best Pickup," and the Chevy Tahoe Hybrid/GMC Yukon Hybrid "Best Eco-Friendly." The Audi R8, Bentley Continental GT Speed and Lexus LS 600h L were MotorWeek's "Best Dream Machine." Coming Soon: SR to Release E-mail Exchanges ... (Not so fast...)
Update: After reviewing the messages and our options (none good), we've decided not to post the messages. Here's the situation: Of the 50 messages, a few have explicit photos embedded in the message. We can't publish those photos (one shows a toddler's penis). We also have a strong ethical policy against blurring or otherwise manipulating photos. Some of the messages are completely innocuous. The rest of the messages only refer to attachments. Those attachments are explicit, so we can't publish them. We've also gone through each message to blur e-mail addresses for privacy reasons. So, if we don't publish any of the explicit images, and we refuse to blur, crop or otherwise alter them, all we're left with is a bunch of forwarded messages that say things like "take a look at this!" We decided that did not advance the story in any significant way.
Beamer Hits Carriage, Cops Hit Cruise Control
On the evening of Dec. 23, a family piled into one of JoAnne Graf's carriages in downtown Seattle to enjoy a horse-drawn holiday ride. A little before 6:30 p.m., as Graf's horse made a left turn onto Pike from First Avenue, the buggy was severely clipped on the right by a man driving a 1999 BMW 328. According to a police report, the Beamer immediately fled the scene. Thankfully, no one was hurt, and the carriage driver managed to get a license plate number, which led the cops to a name and address in Arlington. This was subsequently added to the police report—which includes a stick-figure drawing of a horse—and that was the end of it from the law enforcement side. Graf says she's repeatedly tried to make contact with the man who hit her carriage, but has received no response.
Perfectly poised Patriots
New England was caught in the act, illegally videotaping the Jets' defensive coaches signaling their players (alignments, blitzes, coverages). At least one other team, Green Bay, asserted that the Patriots were discovered committing the misdemeanor in their game in 2006. But the Patriots would be perfect without hackneyed NFL tactics. They have the perfect combination of an extraordinary (if underzealous) coach, a magnificent quarterback, a quality running back, outstanding receivers, a stonework offensive line and a smart, experienced, tough (dirty?) defense. The Patriots have averaged more than 15 victories per year from 2003-07. Three Super Bowl championships in five seasons, and four in seven, would compare favorably to the San Francisco 49ers (three in six years, four in nine), the Dallas Cowboys (three in four) and the best, the Pittsburgh Steelers (four in six).
Shake up in the desert
We have had three terrific Grands Prix this year, with the pendulum swinging backwards and forwards between McLaren and Ferrari. In Melbourne it was Raikkonen who was on top; in Malaysia it was Alonso. And then in Bahrain suddenly Felipe Massa was the man on the top step of the podium. But actually the star turn of the season is the man who has not yet won a race and yet is equal on points to the big guns in the World Championship: Carl Lewis Hamilton. The first rookie in the history of the sport to score three consecutive podium finishes at the start of his career. The man who shows us a new facet of his ability with each passing race. In Melbourne he was a surprise; in Malaysia, as he defended like a tiger, he was a revelation; and in Bahrain we saw Lewis the Hunter, chasing down Felipe Massa in the closing laps of the race and leaving Alonso, double World Champion and former wunderkind, in the dust.
Alpine kids cherish ‘high speed' challenge
The kids from the BSSEF Alpine race team jumped out of the cars, swimsuits in hand. Tomorrow they race, but tonight it's swimming at the White Sulphur Hot Springs pool, chowing down on a burger and fries, and enjoying the fun that traveling to a new ski area brings. The Super G competition at Showdown is famous among Montana kids for its long sloping run, its funky hometown ambiance and of course, the fun of the high speed! They look forward to it all year and can't wait to go again once it's over. This year was no exception and BSSEF's mighty team of 10 kids represented our town with top honors, lots of smiles and great sportsmanship. Young J6 Alexa Coyle set the bar by placing first in her division. Her teammate Valerie Hetherington kept a firm hold on second place and together they topped the podium all three days.
