| Pull your stockings up or quit, Downer
The depleted Coalition ranks were in the House of Representatives' chamber, doing their best to hold the Rudd Government to account over its controversial appointment of former Victorian premier Steve Bracks to head a review of the car industry. Shadow treasurer Malcolm Turnbull moved a censure motion against his counterpart Wayne Swan, prompting a series of votes in the chamber that the Coalition never had any chance of winning because the Government overwhelmingly has the numbers. But in opposition, it's solidarity that is most important. And on that sunny Canberra morning, Alexander Downer and Mark Vaile - two former senior Howard ministers now relegated to the backbench - weren't in the chamber. Instead, they were soaking up the sun at the Royal Canberra Golf Club - one of Australia's most exclusive courses.

Lanai Sports: The Untold Story
"The difference is the peace, tranquility, of the place. This place is such a unique place that Oahu is the hustle and bustle and you come back here it's just a laid back, maybe hawaii 50 years ago," said Lanai resident Rod Sumagit. The 3,000 people who live here love the island's charm. Lanai city is only 1-square mile with a handful of restaurants and stores. Heck, up until last year, this was their jailhouse. And everyone knows everyone. "It is a different life. It's a good life. You see young kids on their bicycles riding to school. You see a lot of people walking around. It's a very close community," said one Lanai woman. We all feel the cost of living in paradise but here it's even steeper. Everything from eggs and milk to clothes and cars is shipped from Oahu with a heftier price tag.
Artel kicks off its 15th year by exploring human spirit
Artel Gallery enters its 15th year with the new show "People: Exploring the Human Spirit." The opening reception is from 6 to 8 p.m. today, and features a raffle for a bottle of champagne. Juried by local artist Susan Myers, the show runs through Feb. 29.The premise here seems somewhere along the lines of showing expression or liveliness. Figure studies, especially nudes, seem to bode well. Jean Harris gathers a set of fleshy nudes standing and sitting; their various positions provide a lesson in composition, if nothing else. Sandy Ford presents a pastel of two nudes whose bodies gracefully overlap. Ford's other pastel, which won "Best of Show," is a pair of bald heads floating in a somber state.Augustina Wells' oil on canvas titled "Puppet" is a ballerina-like figure, her limp wrist tethered to a descending ribbon.Lynne Long Compton shows a photograph of a family in the midst of a possible conflict, or perhaps that's just the way families usually appear.
Former NBA player helps police nab suspect
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - The families of former NFL defensive back Anthony Newman and former NBA guard Terrell Brandon were the victims of an extortion attempt, the Portland Police Bureau said. Bobby Hayes, 41, was charged with theft by extortion and attempted theft by extortion. Police suspect he wrote threatening letters demanding $10,000 from the families of Newman and Brandon, according to court papers. One of the letters arrived early last week at the home of Newman's 65-year-old mother. It was addressed to "NFL Mom." "U don't know me, but I know U," it read. "I want 10K in cash in a black bag set next to your garage door Friday night. If you tell the police and try to be a hero you will be responsible for the murder of your whole family." Brandon, meanwhile, took matters into his own hands.
