Jeff Thelen's Blog
No...were you wrong? No...there is no right or wrong answer to this question. It all depends on who you are sitting near. I don't think there is a rule book on how to act in a theater, just common sense and not be disruptive during the movie. The one thing I would say is "yes" people shouldn't jump the gun by "shhhing" you. But! Some people don't know when to stop...and it ruins the first part of the movie as you don't want to get in a "tussle" once it's started. I think the person was just enacting a "ounce of prevention". However, maybe it was the WAY it was said...which is 80% of the message. To me, it's like being quiet in a library:whether people are sitting and doing nothing or reading...it's expected people will use hushed tones when they enter the building, right? Jeff,As long as someone doesn't talk during the movie--which is really annoying--there is no problem with talking prior to the movie.
North Carolina Beats Wake Forest
Most notably, point guard Ty Lawson, who has been out since spraining his left ankle Feb. 3 early in an overtime win at Florida State. Also, forward Deon Thompson (left knee) and swingman Marcus Ginyard (left big toe, right ankle) are playing through nagging injuries. In other Top 25 games Sunday, it was No. 9 Stanford 79, California 69; No. 10 Xavier 57, Dayton 51; No. 11 Wisconsin 58, Ohio State 53; No. 18 Louisville 75, Pittsburgh 73; and No. 21 Notre Dame 94, Syracuse 87. Tar Heels coach Roy Williams said he doesn't know whether Lawson will play against BC. Thompson was limited to 14 ineffective minutes against the Demon Deacons (16-9, 6-6). At least North Carolina had Hansbrough, who went 9-for-13 from the field and 11-for-14 from the line.
Facebook CEO: 'We Really Messed This One Up'
PALO ALTO, Calif. -- At about 3 a.m. Friday morning, Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg made a public announcement to all Facebook users saying the Facebook team "messed up" the launch of News Feed and Mini-Feed, NBC11's Damian Trujillo reported. The announcement from Zuckerberg comes almost three days after the two features were launched, sending hundreds of thousands of users into a uproar. The News Feed and Mini-Feed allow users to see a collection of actions made by their Facebook friends. None of the information displayed was previously private, yet more than 740,000 users rallied against the new feature, saying it compromised their privacy. The anti-News Feed camp grew at an astonishing pace, making national news as one of the Webs fastest moving trends.
Diva Alert: Mariah, Janet CDs Previewed
Alicia Keys' long run at the top of the charts is about to be threatened. On Thursday I spent more than an hour at Island/DefJam Records previewing the new CDs from Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey. Each is highly anticipated, and with good reason. They're pretty damn good. Carey's CD, "E=MC2," probably is the more anticipated if only because her prior release, "Emancipation of Mimi," was such a phenomenal success. Buoyed by several hits including "We Belong Together" and "Don't Forget About Us," "Emancipation" spent months on the charts and won a number of Grammys. It re-established Mariah as a superstar after her failed "Glitter" project and subsequent "Charmbracelet." "E=MC2" (a play on the previous album's title) should have a pretty big impact when it hits the world on April 15.
Game wasn't a hit in any sense of word
The National Hockey League All-Star Game doesn't have a lot of credibility and Versus, the channel nobody can find, contributed to the carnival-like atmosphere Sunday. The network miked a number of players and Doc Emrick was engaged in a conversation with Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro as the game started. The two were still chatting 12 seconds later when Rick Nash beat DiPietro for the first of his three goals. .
Back in the swim
Fallston swimming co-coach Sheri Huppenthal will never forget the phone call she received from Cougars swimmer Nick Tomechko on the morning of Nov. 26. "Coach Sheri, when you see me this afternoon, I'll be walking," he said. Tomechko had been seriously injured Sept. 10 when he lost control of his car and slammed into a tree. The senior dislocated his left hip and broke his left pelvis, which required three plates and nine screws to repair. .
Economical Hyundai Elantra PZEV is best value in midsize class
The Elantra GLS is a relatively inexpensive, high-quality car with a base price of $13,625. Compare that with base prices for the Ford Focus ($14,705), Honda Civic ($14,810), Suzuki SX4 ($14,770) or Toyota Corolla ($15,250). It was a good drive as test drives go. The Elantra GLS PZEV proved competent on Marin County's twisting, winding roads. Its handling was sure, albeit lacking the precision that some throttle jockeys demand in everything, including minivans. But drivers mindful and accepting of the fact that the Elantra is an economy car meant to be used as an economy car will find little to complain about with this one. It is the genuine article, much as the Miwok Indians who once lived in, loved and honored this place were genuine articles, real examples of how humans, if left to the better angels of their nature, could live in peace with their environment.
