Bush tells Chicago audience he still has prescription for healthy ...

Those factors have combined to build anticipation that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates during its January meeting.

The president acknowledged Monday that recent economic indicators have contained some negative news. But he called the economy "resilient" and noted that it has recovered from earlier stumbling blocks, including terrorist attack, corporate scandals, war and natural disasters.

Bush also acknowledged growing concerns over rising energy prices, but said: "There is no quick fix. I signed good legislation passed by Republicans and Democrats to allow us to diversify away from oil and gas. That's good. But diversification isn't going to happen overnight."

He drew applause when he called for both domestic oil and gas exploration in environmentally friendly ways and on a role for nuclear power in meeting the nation's ongoing energy needs.

Tornado kills one in state

INDEPENDENCE — A tornado that touched down Tuesday afternoon near Lallie Kemp Regional Medical Center fatally injured a 51-year-old woman by picking her up and flinging her against a parked car, hospital officials said.

The woman, whose name was not released by the hospital, was at the LSU system hospital for an outpatient clinic visit while a tornado warning was in effect for central Tangipahoa Parish, said Sherre Pack-Hookfin, acting hospital administrator.

Like other patients, staff and visitors, the woman was advised to stay indoors, but she walked outside to leave, Pack-Hookfin said. Witnesses told hospital officials the woman was pulled into the funnel cloud and thrown against a vehicle, Pack-Hookfin said.

Once it was safe to go outside, medical personnel brought the woman to the emergency room for treatment, where she died from her injuries, Pack-Hookfin said.

BMW Vision EfficientDynamics Concept

Yesterday, DailyTech reported on VW's intention to bring a diesel-electric hybrid Golf to market. The hybrid powertrain would boost fuel economy to nearly 70 MPG on the small two/four-door hatchback.

BMW also has diesel-electric hybrids on the brain with its new Vision EfficientDynamics concept vehicle. The concept is based on the X5 Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) and uses a 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder Variable Twin Turbo diesel engine. The diesel motor develops 204 HP and 295 lb-ft of torque.

Unlike the previous BMW X6 ActiveHybrid concept vehicle which was a full hybrid, the Vision EfficientDynamics is a mild-hybrid vehicle. A 15kw generator boosts total power to 221 HP, while regenerative braking steps in to help power the vehicle's electrical systems and recharge the rear-mounted lithium-ion battery pack.

There has to be a better way to get 43 into the 500

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- If there's a more agonizing, truly brutal qualifying format in all of motorsports than that used for the Daytona 500, I'd like to see it.

Actually, considering the notoriety of the Daytona 500 -- Sprint Cup racing's "Super Bowl" -- there's actually an equal amount of ecstasy to go with the agony.

NASCAR keeps up with Speedweeks tradition

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Renewing a tradition while reinvigorating a classic event, NASCAR drivers are returning again to the sports-car spectacle that annually kicks off Speedweeks -- the Rolex 24 at Daytona on Jan. 26-27.

Stock-car drivers disguised for several days as road racers -- it's nothing new at Daytona International Speedway, site of the Rolex 24, a round-the-clock endurance event that, strangely enough, started off as a comparable sprint -- the three-hour Daytona Continental in 1962.

WSB cancels July Fourth Parade

After nearly 50 years, WSB-TV is discontinuing its annual "Salute 2 America" July 4 parade. The family-friendly festival of floats, marching bands, balloons, TV stars and military personnel annually wound its way through the streets of downtown for 47 years.

Instead, the Atlanta ABC network affiliate plans to expand its metro area coverage on the patriotic holiday this year to include more geographically diverse July 4 celebrations.

"When the parade began, Atlanta was a very small town and now our coverage goals are very different," explained WSB-TV general manager Bill Hoffman in an interview with the AJC on Thursday. "We're trying to broaden our coverage over the July Fourth holiday."

Added Channel 2 program director Art Rogers via a statement: "As a native Atlantan, I've personally witnessed the incredible growth of the metro area.

Bond News

James Bond's Aston Martin DBS is fast. Properly, shockingly, terrifyingly fast fast enough to dilate your pupils and send your heart rate rocketing. I'm riding in one down a deserted, twisting rural road near Aston Martin's headquarters in Warwickshire. As we round a bend, bodies pressed hard against the sides of the carbon-fibre race seats, I spot the next corner 50 yards away. But in the instant it takes me to notice it, the car gets there. There's a deep, loud bellow from the 510bhp, 6.0-litre V12 engine hidden under the elegant bonnet that stretches away in front of us. Suddenly, we are forced hard back, and nearly two tonnes of supercar and passengers lunge forward as if they were weightless. Inside, it's pure Aston Martin. There's original design, with carbon-and- Kevlar seats, while in no other car do you insert a crystal "emotion control unit" into the centre of the dashboard to start the engine.
