| Guide Dogs Raiser injured, canine killed in I-5 collision
A puppy raiser for San Rafael-based Guide Dogs for the Blind was in serious condition Monday after the agency's truck he was driving collided with a car on Interstate 5, killing a guide dog. The incident occurred about 2:30 p.m. Friday on the rain-slick freeway near Williams in Colusa County. Denny Epperson, 59, of Santa Barbara suffered a broken pelvis, a broken leg, three broken ribs and an injured spleen, said officials for Guide Dogs for the Blind. He was airlifted to the University of California at Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, where he remained Monday. There were no other injuries in the wreck, said Sarah Netoff, the agency's administrative manager of canine programs. Netoff said Epperson was returning to San Rafael after he and fellow employee Lee Shenk had been turned around at the Oregon border because of bad weather.

General Motors Corp . is boosting incentives on pickups and sport utility vehicles while holding down such spending on cars, its North American sales chief said. "We fully realize we'll have to spend more money than we'd like to" for the pickups and SUVs, Mark LaNeve said. "We're going to keep our dealers competitive," he said. "We're going to defend our share in trucks." GM has "a minimal amount of incentives" on new car models such as Chevrolet Malibu and Cadillac CTS sedans, he said. .
Mazda SUV lives up to the hype
I was beginning to think Mazda's sales pitch was wearing thin. Can every Mazda have the soul of a sports car? Really? When I saw the company touting the Tribute, a fairly run-of-the-mill SUV, as sporty enough to race, I suspected things had gone too far. And when I saw them introducing their dull-as-grits minivan at the Laguna Seca raceway, I knew the whole marketing department needed psychological help. If Mazda sold a dump truck, you can bet they'd call it the "dump truck with the soul of a sports car" and show it on TV zipping through the Utah desert beside a topless MX-5. "Zoom zoom." Whatever. When I saw Mazda's same cheesy ads for the CX-7 SUV, I took them with a giant-economy-size dose of skepticism. Mid-size SUVs and true sports cars go together like Heather Mills and Paul McCartney.
Mini-van strikes pole, sending 4 to YRMC
Two of four children injured in a Wednesday morning car accident were flown to Phoenix for treatment of serious injuries, while two others were being treated at Yuma Regional Medical Center, Yuma police said. The children were injured when a southbound minivan driven by Carlos Robles, 27, crossed over into northbound lanes of 4th Avenue and struck a light pole in the 1200 block shortly after 8 a.m., Yuma police said. After striking the pole, the van hit a fence encircling Sergio's House of Carpets at 1245 S. 4th Ave. The impact knocked the pole down onto the sidewalk. The four children, whose names were not available, were all under the age of 5, according to police. "Whether child safety restraints were in use at the time is still under investigation," said Clint Norred, police spokesman.

Is it your testimony, sir, that Jeremy Frazier in that time period never operated that vehicle," prosecutor Robert Welsh asked Frazier."That is in fact my testimony," Frazier said.Cross examining Frazier, George asked if he had worked as a police officer in Truro. Extraordinary 'Daisy' Veillette honored
Eight-year-old Marguerite Veillette stood out even among her many talented and attractive peers at a local performing arts academy. There are just some kids who, you meet them for a moment, and they leave an impression that lasts a lifetime. Daisy was one of those, said Randy Stewart, of Fort Wright, regional director of the John Robert Powers Academy in downtown Cincinnati. .

Studies carried out in 2000 showed that 16.5% of women in reproductive age suffered anemia and that this percentage rose to 22% in the poorest population. K.J. gets overlooked, but shouldn't | Braves
I couldn't lift many weights last year, couldn't go up with my arm. I had to do reps with lighter weight." In the 2008 Bill James Handbook, the statistical guru projects Johnson to rack up offensive totals in 2008 that compare favorably to Yankees star Derek Jeter. James projects Johnson will hit .282 with 30 doubles, eight triples, 19 homers, 76 RBIs, a .384 OBP, .473 slugging and .857 OPS. James projects Jeter will hit .312 with 35 doubles, two triples, 15 homers, 76 RBIs, .385 OBP, .443 slugging and .828 OPS. Some fans (and others) assumed after Johnson was dropped from the leadoff spot last summer, and after he was moved from full-time to platoon duties with Escobar, the Braves must not be too high on the converted outfielder. Not so.
Apple peels away old retailing style
LOS GATOS, Calif. — Not a cash register is in sight. The electronics on display are all powered up and ready for use.Personal trainers, specialists and newly minted concierges in aqua-blue shirts make the Apple Store feel part salon, part Internet cafe — just without the espresso. Over the past year, Apple Inc. has revamped its 201 stores, changing the layout, adding services and increasing its staffing. "Apple indeed does things differently from the rest of the retail gang," said Kurt Barnard, president of the Barnard Retail Consulting Group. Clipboard-carrying concierges greet customers at the door to direct them to the right section of the store or to the personal shopper or trainer with whom they had made an appointment. Several others mill the floor in case someone has a question or is ready to buy an iPod, an iPhone or a Macintosh computer.
