Can a sports car be both maligned and loved?

After the Second World War, a nimble little car joined America's ponderous landcraft on our expanding roadways. Narrow, with tall wheels and the distinctly separate fenders typical of cars decades older, the MG TC was a different form of transport. But it was fun.

In a country enamored with cruising, the little MG appealed to those who appreciated the bugs, bumps and rushing wind that emphasized, rather than minimized, motion and speed. Servicemen returning from the war brought these English vehicles home and the sense of adventure the cars and their drivers projected caught on. Americans wanted more MGs and England, in need of export-generated cash, complied.

The elegant if dated TC sold more than its manufacturer could have guessed, so MG followed with slightly refined TD and TF models.

TriMet security measure sails through committee

Bruce Starr, R-Hillsboro, said that was minimizing what is a serious problem, especially at night.

"My wife will not let me take the kids on the train because it's not safe," Starr said.

Sen. Rod Monroe, D-Portland, said TriMet remains lax about checking for ticketless passengers. Monroe described one incident he observed where an inspector caught some passengers without tickets. "All they did is booted them off at the next stop," Monroe said.

Gated entries at stations But Hansen won praise for other steps taken by TriMet. The agency has added more security lights and cameras at MAX platforms, agreed to hire five more transit police, contracted for an additional 15 private security guards, and arranged for more crime-prevention volunteers to ride the trains.

A new transit-police precinct will open in Hillsboro, and talks are under way to open a similar precinct in Gresham, Hansen said.

Is it your testimony, sir, that Jeremy Frazier in that time period never operated that vehicle," prosecutor Robert Welsh asked Frazier."That is in fact my testimony," Frazier said.Cross examining Frazier, George asked if he had worked as a police officer in Truro. Frazier said he was a dispatcher and police officer for "approximately two years" and a full-time patrolman for "little over a year" before starting his business in 1990.Frazier said he began operating his business out of Wellfleet in 1993 and one of three bays he rents at the site was rented in 2002 to his brother, Michael Frazier, Jeremy's brother, and owner of a landscaping business. His brother kept a dump truck, pickup, Bobcat, trailer and other equipment in the rented bay in 2002, Frazier said. Asked the color of the dump truck and pickup, Frazier said both were black.Frazier said he was also driving a pickup in 2002, a 1996 Ford F250 with a black cab and a "very bright blue" body on the back with multiple doors, a style of truck often used by electricians.Any one of your trucks, George asked, "had no business, meaning professional business, up in the area of 40 Depot Road on Jan.

France to penalise gas-guzzlers and pay a bonus for green cars

France set itself on collision course with Brussels yesterday as it announced green taxes on gas-guzzling cars and a state-funded discount for vehicles that emit small quantities of carbon dioxide.

Under the scheme, which may fall foul of European Union competition law, a tax of up to €2,600 (£1,900) will be slapped on 4x4s and high-powered sports cars, from next month. Purchasers of small cars will receive a government payment of up to €1,000 under the plan to curb greenhouse gas emissions in France.

"We are the first Western country to give a bonus to virtuous products," Jean-Louis Borloo, the Ecology Minister, said.

The move, dubbed the ecological no-claims bonus, was welcomed by environmentalists but is certain to anger German manufacturers, such as Mercedes and BMW, which will be hit by the new taxes.

July 2007

So, for that matter, does The Standard-Times of New Bedford, whose deep reporting on yesterday's proceedings shows that this fight is a long way from being over. First, consider this, from Steve Decosta's story: After casting their votes on the agreement and before the final tally was announced, the body, on a hand vote, ironically rejected a nonbinding question to approve casino gambling in town. Only about half the voters remained on the high school athletic field for that tally."I don't think that's a true indication of how people feel, because so many people had left," said Marsha Brunelle, selectmen chairwoman.Asked if that outcome tainted the vote on the agreement, Mr. Marshall [Glenn Marshall, the Wampanoag chief] said: "It's the end of a hot day, people get tired, people leave. The true number is the one that got counted."But casino opponents would not minimize their victory."That's the root question," said Jacqueline Tolosko, president of the anti-casino group Casinofacts.

Lawyer: Japan Should Avoid Slay Case

Given that this case has been closed in Japan, the Justice Ministry and Japanese police should no longer have to respond to requests from the police for evidence or to cooperate with the investigation," said Miuri's lawyer, Shinichiro Hironaka.

Miura and his wife were visiting Los Angeles on Nov. 18, 1981, when they were shot in a parking lot. Miura was hit in the right leg, while his 28-year-old wife was shot in the head. The shooting caused an international uproar, in part because he blamed the attack on robbers, reinforcing Japanese perceptions of America as violent.

The arrest came after cold-case detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department worked with authorities in Saipan and in Guam, police said in a statement. Police did not make details on the arrest available.

James Bond-inspired submarine ready for launch

A car that can be driven underwater is set to be unveiled next month at the International Geneva Motor Show, the Swiss manufacturer of the prototype announced.

The 'sQuba', reminiscent of James Bond's underwater car in the 1977 film The Spy Who Loved Me is, according to manufacturer Rinspeed, the world's first real submersible car.

Rinspeed's head, Frank Rinderknecht, is a James Bond enthusiast who has dreamed of making the amphibious vehicle come true.

"For three decades I have tried to imagine how it might be possible to build a car that can fly under water," said Mr Rinderknecht in a statement. "Now we have made this dream come true."

The convertible sports car transforms into an underwater vehicle in which passengers breathe with the help of compressed air masks.
