Withdrawal means defeat for U.S., Iraqis

There may be hope for some of these progressives, if only they realized that waging war is not done on a contract basis with specific goals and specific completion dates, like building homes or highways.

Watson writes: "Selfishness drives each group to achieve what it wants. There is no true spirit of compromise to build a functioning country." As I read that, for a bright shining moment, I had a vision of all our politicians and staffers making a "strategic withdrawal from Washington, D.C. What a lovely thought!

Is It Too Late for Hillary?

We believe that it's next to impossible for Senator Clinton to close the delegate count," Obama campaign manager David Plouffe told reporters the morning after the Potomac primaries.

Much of the blame, from both within and outside the campaign, has been aimed at Clinton's chief strategist, Mark Penn. "He never adjusted," says a prominent Democrat. "I don't think he knows how to do primaries. He doesn't know how to do what is essentially a family fight." But that explanation misses a larger possibility: that Bill and Hillary Clinton, who came of age in politics a generation ago, no longer have the touch for the electorate they once did.

Now, having blown through more than $120 million, Clinton's campaign is struggling to build a campaign from scratch in Ohio and Texas, with political observers in near agreement that a failure to win both could be fatal.

ETC. News: Nick Hogan Bollea arrested today for driving recklessly ...

Nick Bollea, a/k/a Nick Hogan, was arrested earlier today. He turned himself in on charges of reckless driving involving serious bodily injury, according to reports out of Florida. The passenger in the car he crashed in August remains comatose. He was handcuffed as he arrived at the police station today, accompanied by two police officers. He didn't answer any media questions as he entered Pinellas County Jail to be booked. Bollea's blood test for alchohol came back at a positive of 0.055, well above the 0.02 limit allowed for a driver under age 21. The legal limit for a 21-plus adult is 0.08. He was under that. He also had illegal window tinting. The St. Petersburg Times reports that Nick was boating with his father, Hulk Hogan (Terry Bollea) and friends. A friend said Nick was drinking on the boat, but he didn't know what he was drinking.

Bai and Kang claim top prizes in BMW medal

Dubai: J.I. Bai emerged the overall winner for the February BMW medal with a nett 68 on a slightly warmer Saturday afternoon at the Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club.

Even with the fast greens and a gross nine on his card, Bai negotiated his way to his first medal win at the club.

Finishing two shots back in the men's 'B' division and alone in second place was Pierre Abou Joude with net 70.

In the men's division 'A' category, Burhan Khan secured the first place with a respectable nett 72, while Gray Chapman clinched the second place, two shots back, on nett 74.

The best gross score of the day was registered by Mark Dennehy's 82.

The ladies' division proved a much-closer affair with two players tied on net 78. .

Thistles and thorns

A thistle to Obama for standing up to Detroit automakers and aiming to increase fuel economy standards. If he can, in fact, improve energy efficiency 50 percent by 2030, will his personal motorcade go green, too?

A thorn to Obama for believing in capital punishment — even if it is only for “punishing the most heinous crimes."

A thistle to Obama for seeing immigrants as people, not just aliens, and desiring to reunite families when possible and helping solve problems that send immigrants across the border in the first place.

A thorn to Obama for sending mixed political messages. It is misaligned to at once support small businesses and be unable to regularly stand up to large corporations.

John McCain

A thistle to McCain for supporting a citizenship program for illegal immigrants who are already here because they've worked harder to be American than most Americans…or because otherwise he'd have to fire his gardener...

Shark and son doing it tough

Kent Jones had six birdies en route to a six-under 66 at Pebble Beach which gave him a one-stroke lead over fellow Americans John Mallinger, Roland Thatcher and Brad Adamonis.

Of the other Australians Matt Jones (70), Mathew Goggin (71) and Michael Sim (72) also fared well while previously in-form veteran Steve Elkington did even worse than Norman with a 78 after playing the front nine at Poppy Hills in seven over.

Norman is playing the tournament in a rare return to the tour at the prompting of his two-handicapper son Gregory, 22, for whom he managed to secure a start in the amateur section.

He was holding steady until a four-putt on the 13th hole for a double bogey and finished the round with a disappointing total of 34 putts. The Norman team combined for a 70 to be well back in the pro-am team section where 63 was the leading score.

Facebook rocks the vote

EVANSTON, Illinois (CNN) -- Rock the Vote uses music and popular culture to get young people involved in politics, so it's probably no surprise that the group is using Facebook to reach plugged-in voters.
